What is Bundesliga?
The Bundesliga is the top flight of German football, with top teams from across the country competing each year for the Meisterschale. Dominated in recent years by Bayern Munich, the Bundesliga features elite players and compelling soccer games every week.
History of Bundesliga?
The Bundesliga was founded in August 1963. But it experienced some turbulent times in Germany before becoming the successful league it is today.
Prior to the Bundesliga, German football was entirely amateur or semi-professional. Many of Germany's best players moved abroad to play. However, national championships were still played every year, with the first edition in 1903.
When the Bundesliga was first formed, the league was originally for West German teams only. The DS-Oberliga was established for teams in Eastern Germany. Hansa Rostock and Dynamo Dresden became the first two East German teams to join the Bundesliga following reunification in 1990.
German giants Bayern Munich are the most successful team in Bundesliga history, with 34 titles. Between 2012-13 and 2022-23, they won the Bundesliga 11 years in a row. However, Bayer Leverkusen broke their winning streak by winning their first-ever Bundesliga title in the 2023-24 season.
In the league’s history, 13 teams have been crowned Bundesliga champions since the league’s inception. Alongside Bayern, Borussia Dortmund, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Werder Bremen, Hamburger SV, VFB Stuttgart, FC Köln, and Kaiserslautern have all won the trophy at least twice.
Which teams play in the Bundesliga?
Every season, 18 Bundesliga teams from across Germany compete. With the promotion-relegation format, the exact teams change every year. Either 2 or 3 teams are relegated to 2. Bundesliga, while 2 or 3 teams get promoted from 2. Bundesliga. This season, Schalke 04, SV Elversberg, and SC Paderborn were promoted, while VfL Wolfsburg, FC Heidenheim, and FC St. Pauli were relegated.
The full list of teams competing in the league consists of:
FC Augsburg (2. Bundesliga runners-up 2010-11)
Union Berlin (1-time runners-up in 1922-23)
Werder Bremen (4-time winners, 7-time runners-up) - Last win in 2003-04

Who won the 2025/26 Bundesliga title?

Bundesliga format & schedule in 2026-27
The Bundesliga schedule is a round-robin in which each team plays 34 matches. Half are at home, and half are away, with two matches against each opponent. Teams earn three points for a win, one for a draw, and none for a loss. These points rank teams in the table, with goal difference and goals scored used to break ties.
At the end of the season, the team at the top of the table will be crowned champions, while the bottom two are relegated to 2. Bundesliga. The 16th-placed team will enter a relegation play-off against the team that finishes third in 2. Bundesliga.
The top four-placed teams in the Bundesliga qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League, while 5th place qualifies for the Europa League league phase and 6th place enters the Conference League playoff round.

Bundesliga betting tips, predictions & strategies
Here are some handy tips that will help you as you make your Bundesliga 2023/24 selections:
Research - Always do your research and consider a team’s current form and their place in the Bundesliga standings. Check whether key players are missing or whether one team has a clear home-field advantage.
Form - Always pay attention to form when betting on soccer matches. This typically has a big impact on upcoming matches, as in-form teams perform better overall. It’s generally considered more important than the home advantage, as last season, home sides won 39% of games while away teams won 36% of the time.
Betting on the over - The Bundesliga is home to some of Europe’s top attacking players. Many teams tend to play an aggressive, high-press style, which often leads to high-scoring games.
