Stake recap: Germany and the Netherlands crash out, the Round of 16 is arriving, and Silverstone hosts a home-crowd showdown

The knockout rounds of the biggest international football tournament in history have already claimed two giants. Germany and the Netherlands are both out while all three co-hosts marched into the Round of 16 for the first time. Outside the pitch, George Russell won in Austria to reignite the F1 title race just in time for this weekend's British Grand Prix, Wimbledon's first week delivered a farewell and a few frights, and the Esports World Cup has begun in Paris. Plenty to get through at Stake this week.

The Round of 32 was brutal to the big names

The knockout stage opened with carnage. Germany, a major favourite in the groups, went out 4-3 on penalties to Paraguay after a 1-1 draw. The Netherlands followed a day later, beaten 3-2 in a shootout by Morocco after their own 1-1 stalemate. Meanwhile all three co-hosts advanced: the USA beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0, Canada claimed their first knockout win in history against South Africa, and Mexico beat Ecuador for their first knockout victory in 40 years. Spain finally woke up too, going 3-0 against Austria winning them their first knockout-round win since lifting the trophy in 2010. England edged DR Congo 2-1 after falling behind, with Harry Kane scoring the winner. Track every fixture on the international football tournament page at Stake.

Russell wins in Austria, title race tightens again

George Russell converted pole into victory at the Red Bull Ring on Sunday, holding off a resurgent Max Verstappen with Kimi Antonelli completing the podium. This win moves Russell up to second in the Drivers' Championship and trims Antonelli's lead to 40 points while Lewis Hamilton who was fifth on the day, slips to third.

Wimbledon's first week: Zverev cruises

The grass-court Slam is through its opening rounds. Alexander Zverev, Taylor Fritz, and Alex de Minaur have all moved through cleanly, Matteo Berrettini knocked out 20th seed Arthur Fils on Centre Court, and Grigor Dimitrov ousted 15th seed Jakub Mensik. The 2026 Wimbledon outright markets are open through to the 12 July final.

T1 storm through the MSI play-ins

The Mid-Season Invitational is underway in Daejeon, South Korea, and T1 has been ruthless! Winning 3-0 sweeps over both Team Liquid and Karmine Corp to book the last Bracket Stage spot, T1 doesn’t look like they’re slowing down at all. The eight-team double-elimination bracket starts today on 3 July, with two-time defending champions Gen.G notably absent after failing to qualify. Hanwha Life Esports and Bilibili Gaming enter as favourites, but a T1 side building momentum in front of a home crowd is never a comfortable opponent.

X Games League debuts in Sacramento

The MoonPay X Games League opened its inaugural season at Cal Expo last weekend, with the new four-club format (LA, NYC, São Paulo, Tokyo) making its competitive debut across 18 skateboard, BMX, and Moto X events. As an X Games partner, we had a front-row seat to the league era's first medals. The circuit moves to Chiba, Japan this weekend for stop two.

This weekend's best betting opportunities

Between the Round of 16, a home Grand Prix for five British drivers, and the Tour rolling out of Barcelona, this is one of the busiest sports betting weekends of the summer. All live offers can be found on the Stake promotions page but these are the top highlights you should keep an eye on!

The Round of 16 - co-hosts, England, and a stacked weekend
